AUDITION INFORMATION FOR NEW SINGERS


Auditions will be held by appointment. They are normally scheduled for June and August and are held in Room 254, David Gardner Hall, University of Utah School of Music. Please contact Judy Prawitt, Audition Coordinator, at 571-0933 or by e mail: jprawitt@msn.com to schedule an appointment.

For the Audition:

1. Please prepare a piano-accompanied solo of your own choice, preferably sostenuto. A hymn or folk song is also appropriate. The purpose of this is to hear you sing music with which you feel comfortable and that will demonstrate your vocal ability. You do not need to bring an accompanist.

2. You will be asked to vocalize to check your singing range.

3. You will be asked to sight-read.

4. You will be asked to commit to attending all rehearsals and concerts for the entire season and agree to pay the required tuition/dues and money for concert attire.

5. Please bring a completed audition form to your scheduled aucdition.

AUDITION INFORMATION FOR THE SALT LAKE CHAMBER CHOIR


If you would like to be considered for the Salt Lake Chamber Choir, please prepare the following in addition to the requirements above for new singers.

1. In addition to preparing a piano-accompanied solo of your choice, be prepared to sing the following scales a cappella: Chromatic, whole-tone, harmonic minor, and major.

2. Read aloud the following Latin text using Roman pronunciation:

Jubilate Deo, omnis terra; servite Domino in laetitia.
Introite in conspectu ejus in exultatione.
Scitote quoniam Dominus ipse est Deus; ipse fecit nos, et non ipsi nos;
Populus ejus, et oves pascuae ejus.

3. Read aloud the following German text using the rules of lyric (sung) diction:

Jubilate Deo, omnis terra; servite Domino in laetitia.
"Wachet auf," ruft uns die Stimme Der Wächter sehr hoch auf der Zinne, "Wach auf, du Stadt Jerusalem!Mitternacht heißt diese Stunde"; Sie rufen uns mit hellem Munde: "Wo seid ihr klugen Jungfrauen? Wohl auf, der Bräutgam kömmt; Steht auf, die Lampen nehmt! Allelujah!

4. You will be asked to commit to attending all rehearsals and concerts for the entire season and agree to pay the required tuition/dues and money for concert attire.

5. Be prepared to take a short theory exam that will test your musical skills:
i.e. key signatures, intervals, chord qualities, rhythm, musical notation, etc.

AUDITION INFORMATION FOR SECTION LEADERS .and ASSISTANT CONDUCTORS


If you are interested in auditioning as one of the professional section leaders, please prepare all of the requirements listed above in addition to the following:

1. Prepare two additional vocal solos in different languages, preferably in different musical styles/periods.

2. Be prepared to sight-read additional material.

3. Conducting and keyboard skills may be tested briefly—as you are comfortable.
