FALL CONCERT
“Serenade to Music”
Saturday, October 27, 2007, 7:30 p.m.
Libby Gardner Concert Hall
FEATURING: “Dona Nobis Pacem” and “Serenade to Music”
by Ralph Vaughan Williams
Written in 1936 on the brink of World War II, Dona Nobis Pacem combines orchestra and choir in a stirring commentary on the ravages of war and the sacrifices of those who die. Vaughan Williams masterfully fuses three Civil War poems of Walt Whitman, text from the liturgical mass, an anti-war speech of the British reformist John Bright, and passages from Jeremiah into a poignant plea for peace. Slightly less dramatic but equally beautiful, Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music draws text from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. Featuring soloists Carol Ann Allred and Darrell Babidge and the Copper Hills High School choir, these works will create a strikingly memorable evening.

DECEMBER CONCERT
"Magnificat"
Friday and Saturday, December 14–15, 2007, 7:30 p.m.
Libby Gardner Concert Hall
Featuring "Magnificat" by Johann Sebastian Bach and holiday music in collaboration with
The Salt Lake Symphony.
A master's masterwork, Bach's Magnificat was written in 1723 for the Christmas Vespers and derives its text from the first chapter of Luke. Peppered with soaring melismas, delightful fugues, and demanding arias, this is a stunning work that will leave you in awe. Combining the talents of soloists Carol Ann Allred, Sarah Maughan, and Darrell Babidge, the Salt Lake Choral Artists and the Salt Lake Symphony will convey the power of Mary's song, "My soul doth magnify the Lord." The evening will also feature lively arrangements of holiday music by Leroy Anderson, Mark Riese, and Carmen Dragon. Come and enjoy the season!
FEBRUARY CONCERT
"And All That Jazz!”
Saturday, February 16, 2008, 7:30 p.m.
Libby Gardner Concert Hall
FEATURING: “Images” for Jazz Trio and choir by Rob Landes,
“Songs and Sonnets” by George Shearing, and “Birthday Madrigals” by John Rutter
Images is a charming work written by Rob Landes whose effective use of words and music will bring a smile to your face and get you swingin'. Shearing's Songs and Sonnets is a delightful jazz piece that sets seven Shakespearean texts in innovative ways-without diminishing the original poetic beauty. And finally, written for Shearing's 75th birthday, John Rutter's Birthday Madrigals is a five-movement composition that draws from classic madrigal texts…presenting them in a way you didn't learn in high school! Join us for an enchanting evening of romantic jazz.
MAY CONCERT
“Elijah”
Saturday, May 10, 2008, 7:30 p.m.
Libby Gardner Concert Hall
Featuring: "Elijah" by Felix Mendelsohnn
Sung in English with full orchestra
In an 1838 letter, Mendelssohn wrote, "I imagined Elijah as a real prophet through and through, of the kind we could really do with today." After the oratorio's premiere in 1846 it was said in the newspapers: "Never was there a more complete triumph; never a more thorough and speedy recognition of a great work of art." While it is an obvious nod to the works of Handel and Bach, Elijah is an astounding work in its own right with such choruses as He, Watching Over Israel, Lift Thine Eyes, and Behold, God the Lord. Featuring Darrell Babidge in the title role with supporting soloists Kiersten Gunlogson and George Dyer, you'll be carried away to a glorious world of sound.
