Mission – The mission of Salt Lake Choral Artists is to:

  • Nurture and continuously improve the musical and vocal skills of SLCA choir members through dedicated study, rehearsal, and performance of a wide variety of literature

History – The Salt Lake Choral Artists (SLCA) is one of America’s premiere community choirs, continuing a tradition of superb choral singing that began as the Jay Welch Chorale more than thirty years ago. When Dr. Brady Allred was appointed as Artistic Director and Conductor in 2004, the group was reorganized to include a large concert choir of approximately 150 voices, and a women’s choir and chamber choir, each approximately 50 voices strong.  The organization now includes a children’s choir, the Young Choral Artists, a Men’s Choir, a Youth Honor Choir, and the Salt Lake Vocal Artists, which is the international touring choir.

Time Commitment – Weekly rehearsals, dress rehearsals and concerts as scheduled, recruiting, and planning and preparation. Organize, supervise, and teach at the Young Choral Artists Summer Choir Camp.

Requirements and Responsibilities:

Musicality/Musicianship – Degree(s) in music and desire to grow artistically required; master of music degree in choral conducting and experience working with a community-based chorus preferred; experience working with children and young voices; hire and supervise accompanist and guest musicians; appoint and supervise parent volunteers; facilitate ways to learn music outside of rehearsal (e.g., creation of practice tracks/recordings).

Community Outreach – Increase opportunities to support our mission and non-profit status through public performances, service and networking; prepare repertoire ready for run-out opportunities; serve as advocate for the organization; involvement in the Summer Choral Institute and International Choral Academy as skills and time permit.

Internal Community – Maintain strong, collaborative relationships with the Artistic Director and other artistic staff; recruit and retain singers; help build community between singers; consult with chorus committees as needed; provide long-range planning and programming.

Required Skills and Abilities – Demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal; participate in chorus-supported professional development (e.g., attend workshops and conferences, participate in professional organizations, etc); advance commissioning projects; sing in one of the other choirs as time permits.
