SUMMER CHORAL INSTITUTE 2019

With daytime, evening, and weekend events, there’s something to fit every schedule.
SCI offers a broad variety of musical styles and expert instruction in multiple areas! Open to choral music teachers, enthusiasts, and singers of all ages. Participants will rehearse and perform under internationally renowned conductor, Dr. Brady Allred. Each SCI session will include members of the Salt Lake Choral Artists.

Music From the Stage and Screen

Thursday – Saturday, June 13-15, 2019

Conducted by Brady Allred 

Enjoy a weekend of singing songs from your favorite musicals and movies!  Please send your song suggestions to us by May 20 for consideration! We will feature music from classic musicals like The Sound of Music, The King and I, and Man of LaMancha as well as more contemporary favorites from Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Mary Poppins, and The Greatest Showman!  The concert will also feature solos and duets by guest artists!

Choral Classics

CONDUCTING WORKSHOP

Evening Sessions, June 11, 18, 25, 27, & July 2, 2019

This summer we offer both afternoon and evening sessions to try and accommodate those who work full-time! Become the conductor you have always wanted to be – improve your rehearsal techniques and conducting skills in a friendly and nurturing class setting. Daily sessions will cover such topics as tips for selecting choral literature, score study and preparation, dynamic phrasing, acquiring and using meaningful conducting gestures, effective rehearsal techniques, and beautiful singing. Students will have opportunities to conduct the class as a lab chorus and to observe and participate in a rehearsal of the Salt Lake Vocal Artists. Participants receive a packet of materials for each session. Conductors of any level are welcome—from beginning to advanced—and are encouraged to attend all sessions but may pick and choose the dates and times according to your availability.

Voice Classes

GROUP VOICE INSTRUCTION

Join us for a series of interactive classes designed to help you better understand and use your voice to its fullest! We’ll discuss vocal anatomy, the mechanics of breathing, variations in register and resonance, vibrato, style, expression, and anything else you might have a question about. Music will be provided and there will be plenty of opportunities to sing to experience and implement the ideas and techniques discussed.Join us for a series of interactive classes designed to help you better understand and use your voice to its fullest! High School Retreat

 

2019 SLCA HIGH SCHOOL RETREAT

Tuesday – Thursday, Aug 6-8, 2019

Retreat Activities: First Baptist Church (800 S 1300 E, Salt Lake City)
Final Concert at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Salt Lake City

Come join with singers from all over the region! The SLCA High School Retreat is:
• A powerful head-start on the year.
• A great time for singers to bond.
• A source of new ideas, repertoire, & more.
• A place to energize yourself and your singers.

Over 200 students traditionally attend our High School Chamber Choir Retreat and the participation grows each year for this successful “choir camp!”  Choir directors from any high school are encouraged to bring their chamber choirs or madrigal groups to this three-day fun and intense musical and social event.  The three days of activities include daily rehearsals with Dr. Cory Evans of Utah State University, workshops and classes in sight-reading, music theory, diction, voice training, and leadership.  Every evening will include social activities and the final evening will feature each choir individually and the combined choirs in a festival concert.

The registration fee for this exciting retreat ($80/student) includes:
• Three days of premier choral instruction with Dr. Cory Evans Director of Choral Activities, Utah State University
• Workshops on various topics relating to music and leadership
• Rehearsal time with individual groups
• Music and materials
• Meals – 4 meals included!
