SUMMER CHORAL INSTITUTE 2017

With daytime, evening, and weekend events, there’s something to fit every schedule.
SCI offers a broad variety of musical styles and expert instruction in multiple areas! Open to choral music teachers, enthusiasts, and singers of all ages. Participants will rehearse and perform under internationally renowned conductor, Dr. Brady Allred. Each SCI session will include members of the Salt Lake Choral Artists.

SESSION ONE

Jewels: Gospel Songs in the Beautiful Tradition of Bluegrass

Friday & Saturday, June 16 & 17, 2017

This session will include favorite hymns arranged in the bluegrass style such as Amazing Grace, Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, How Can I Keep From Singing?, Children, Go Where I Send Thee, and more.

“St. John Passion” – New Music of Bob Chilcott

Bob Chilcott’s mighty setting of words from the Gospel of St. John is a dramatic yet uplifting retelling of the Passion story. Includes eight solo parts.

Conducting Workshop

CONDUCTING WORKSHOP

Monday – Friday, June 19-23, 2017

1:00 pm – 4:00 pm daily

Become the conductor you have always wanted to be – improve your rehearsal techniques and conducting skills in a friendly and nurturing class setting. Daily sessions will cover such topics as tips for selecting choral literature, score study and preparation, dynamic phrasing, acquiring and using meaningful conducting gestures, effective rehearsal techniques, and beautiful singing.


Voice Classes

GROUP VOICE INSTRUCTION

Join us for a series of interactive classes designed to help you better understand and use your voice to its fullest! We’ll discuss vocal anatomy, the mechanics of breathing, variations in register and resonance, vibrato, style, expression, and anything else you might have a question about. Music will be provided and there will be plenty of opportunities to sing to experience and implement the ideas and techniques discussed.

Musicianship Classes

MUSICIANSHIP CLASSES

Dr. Sue Neimoyer will design the course of study to the needs of the class members while focusing on music reading, sight-singing, aural skills, dictation, and rhythmic skills. Gain a better understanding of music theory and practice to apply in the choir rehearsals.

High School Retreat

2017 SLCA HIGH SCHOOL RETREAT

Tuesday – Thursday, Aug 1-3, 2017
Final Concert at Libby Gardner Concert Hall

Come join with singers from all over the region! The SLCA High School Retreat is:
• A powerful head-start on the year.
• A great time for singers to bond.
• A source of new ideas, repertoire, & more.
• A place to energize yourself and your singers.

Last year 12 schools participated, culminating in an exciting concert. Nearly 300 students joined in a grand chorus, singing repertoire that many teachers were able to use in their regular repertoire for the year.

The retreat closes with a grand finale concert at the beautiful Libby Gardner Concert Hall, as schools perform for each other, then join their voices to create spectacular music!

The registration fee for this exciting retreat ($75/student) includes:
• Three days of premier choral instruction with Dr. Brady Allred
• Workshops on various topics relating to music and leadership
• Rehearsal time with individual groups
• Music and materials
• Meals – 4 meals included!
