Session 1: The Lullaby of Broadway Enjoy your favorite songs from some of Broadway’s most popular musicals, such as Oklahoma, South Pacific, State Fair, West Side Story, Ragtime, Big River, Mary Poppins, The Secret Garden, The Lion King and Wicked. Rehearsals for high school and adult singers will be held on Thursday and Friday evenings (7-10 pm) and all day Saturday with a Saturday evening performance. All events will take place at the University of Utah School of Music. Schedule: Thursday, June 12, 7:00 - 10:00 pm Session 2: Folk Music from Around the World In collaboration for the first time, the Salt Lake Choral Artists and the Madeleine Choir School of Salt Lake City invite singers of ALL AGES to participate in this Family Session which will feature children’s choir, high school festival choir, adult choir, soloists, and instrumentalists! Each of the choirs will prepare folk songs from various parts of the world including South America, Africa, Australia, the South Pacific, Western and Eastern Europe, Canada and the United States. Members of the choirs will also learn and perform the “Misa Criolla”, composed by Ariel Ramírez: an exciting and powerful setting of the mass in popular South American musical styles. Participants will enjoy the opportunity to learn about the art of conducting along with several graduate student conductors as Dr. Brady Allred coaches them through rehearsals and performance. They will also perform parts of this work, along with other motete for the children’s choir, at the Cathedral’s 3:00 pm Spanish mass on Sunday, July 13th. The renowned Madeleine Choir School and local high school teachers staff will work with the children’s and high school choirs. Rehearsal sessions have been designed to fit busy family schedules. ADULT SCHEDULE: HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR SCHEDULE (Grades 9-12): CHILDREN’S CHOIR SCHEDULE (Grades 3-8): Option B: Full Day Camp Session 3: Peace and Paradise: Requiems by Fauré and Rutter Experience the peace and beauty of choral music for strings, organ, and choir as we perform Gabriel Fauré’s “Requiem” along with John Rutter’s “Requiem.” These works are exciting and powerful settings of sacred texts that promote peace, love, and harmony and are sure to inspire and delight you. Participants will enjoy the opportunity to learn about the art of conducting along with several graduate student conductors as Dr. Brady Allred coaches them through rehearsals and performance. Join us as we brush off our vocal cords, brush up our reading skills, and sing through selected masterworks from 7 pm to 9 pm on four Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. Repertoire includes the Duruflé “Requiem,” Haydn’s “Lord Nelson Mass,” “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff, Poulenc’s “Gloria,” and opera choruses. Choral Conducting Workshop Non-credit workshop for beginning and intermediate conductors July 7-11, 2008 Become the conductor you have always wanted to be! Improve your rehearsal techniques and conducting skills in a friendly and nurturing class setting. Dr. Allred will focus on tips for choral literature selection, score study and preparation, dynamic phrasing, the acquisition and use of meaningful conducting gestures, effective rehearsal techniques, performance practice, diction, and beautiful singing. Students will have daily opportunities to conduct the class as a lab chorus, to sing in the Salt Lake Choral Artists’ Summer Institute Chorus, and to work with the Institute Chorus. Conducting sessions are videotaped for personal evaluation. Participants will receive a packet of music at the beginning of the week for use during the class. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced conductors are welcome to register for this course.
